"If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India!"

Photography Expeditions

Inspired by real-life photographic assignments, GeckoWorkshops Expeditions are intensive, practical courses in travel photography. Travelling to some of the finest destinations in India, GeckoWorkshops Expeditions offer participants a rare opportunity to refine their photographic skills and gain a real insight into the working methods of a professional photographer.

Each Expedition is unique and presents its own spectacular photographic opportunities. While offering access to a choice of subjects ranging from architecture to environmental portraiture, each Expedition deliberately focuses on a particular theme. But whether we are photographing the arrival of the monsoon on the shores of the Malabar Coast, or travelling across the Great Indian Desert – our aim is always to enable participants to develop their own style while assembling a coherent body of images documenting their journey.

To ensure that each member of the Expedition receives the Leader’s support and personal attention throughout the journey, the number of participants is limited to six or eight. As our Expeditions are shaped by the hunt for images, we spend as much time as possible in the field, taking photographs. Expeditions’ itineraries and schedules are designed to take full advantage of the photographic opportunities we encounter, so shooting days are long and rewarding.

In keeping with the focus of Expeditions, our choice of accommodation is generally dictated by access and proximity to shooting locations. However, our aim is never to let our eyes rest, and we make it a point of staying in hotels which reflect the historical character and, wherever possible, preserve the natural resources of the areas to which we travel.

In Kerala we enjoy traditional hospitality in heritage hotels and cruise along the Backwaters aboard the magnificent kettuvalams houseboats that were once used to transport rice. In Rajasthan, when we are not shooting, we enjoy the splendour of former Maharajas palaces and merchants havelis, while in the desert we seek refuge from the heat in well-equipped desert camps. In Hampi, Karnataka, we stay amongst the ruins of the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire.

The intensive nature of our Expeditions make them ideal for those who wish to acquire or expand their first-hand knowledge of photography. Although our routes vary, each Expedition presents its own challenges and requires a good level of stamina and general fitness.
